Report for Workshop on Developing Educational Material for HCI NordiCHI
Description
A workshop on the development of educational material for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) was held at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, coinciding with the first NordiCHI conference. The rationale of this workshop was to investigate alternative possibilities to provide the HCI community with a qualitative resource of educational material, which is useful, accessible, and affordable, where the focus is on topics that are not exactly textbook topics, but which in many cases can be used to augment the available textbooks. The first part of the workshop focussed on a discussion of suitable types of materials to be published in this way, while the second part of the workshop focussed on criteria to be placed on the material (essentially creating a template for contributions to this database).
This workshop was a follow-up of the HCI Education workshop (Cox, Oestreicher et al. 1999) held during the INTERACT 99 Conference in Edinburgh. Discussions at the 1999 workshop revealed several interesting issues in HCI education, and some of them have been documented in a report [# 452](Oestreicher, 2000, a draft of the report is available from the URL: http://www. dis. uu. se/~ larsoe/eduworkshop/]. There is also a similar effort run by the ACM SIGCHI, which published an initial plan for a similar work (Sears, Jacko et al. 1997). In 1997 a workshop was held with the aim of describing the Swedish situation in HCI education (Gulliksen and Oestreicher 1999).
