Description
The retention and early growth of ovaries of Earlipak No. 7 tomatoes and a related breeding line were recorded weekly for several weeks at 4 locations. Significant sources of variation in the percentage of ovaries retained were date, variety, interaction of date and variety and in some cases individual plants. The same was true for variations in ovary growth except that individual plants were not a source of variation. Variations in the percentage of ovaries retained could not be correlated with young fruit growth. Fruit set, defined as the percentage of flowers of which ovaries were retained to reach a diameter of at least 0.25 in. in 2 weeks, sometimes reflected the percentage of ovaries retained and at other times young fruit growth.
