In recent years right-wing nationalism has become a central issue in Italian politics, prompting a left-wing reasoning on the problem of using national identity in politics. Today as yesterday, some suggested that the Left should respond to right-wing nationalism by refusing any bond with national identity. However, this is a problematic strategy, that risks distancing the Left from its own popular traditions. There exist better examples and reflections to draws inspiration from, both in the past and in the present.
