Participatory modelling is a promising method to support understanding of transitions, provide policy advice and facilitate stakeholder processes. This chapter provides an overview of the different methods and forms of participatory modeling that have been applied in the sustainability transitions research field. A systematic literature review was conducted to reveal multiple dimensions of participatory modeling, including different modeling methods, model uses, timing schemes of stakeholder participation and modes of knowledge capture and exchange. The results show the various emphases and gaps with regard to participatory modeling in the sustainability transitions research field. Future research could focus on the gaps identified in this review, which are co-management and co-construction approaches for participatory modeling.
