Born in the capital city of Port-au-Prince and spending his early childhood years in the small southwestern coastal village of Port-a-Piment, Haitian diasporic film director Raoul Peck fled the country with his parents when he was only eight years old in 1961, during the early years of the reign of dictator François" Papa Doc" Duvalier. Resettling in the Republic of Congo, Peck spent his late childhood years in Léopoldville in the newly independent central African country, later studying in Brooklyn, New York and in Orleans, France. During his post-secondary education, Peck studied both economics and industrial engineering in Germany before entering the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB) in Berlin.(His education also assumed non-conventional, non-academic forms, having worked as a taxi driver in New York for a year while awaiting admission to the DFFB.)
