As exemplified by the young woman quoted above, it is not possible to bring one's popularity or social standing from high school into the college environment. Distinctions earned In high school cannot aid in the process of finding a place for oneself in college. They are not only irrelevant but also commonplace. Especially if the student attends a college away from home, he or she is faced with the task of building a completely new set of social relationships. As for romantic relationships, college students arc faced with the problem of attracting the opposite sex in an unfamiliar arena, where they may or may not" have what it takes."
