Description
The term masochism was first coined to refer to a pattern of sexual activity, and sexual masochism is the clearest and most familiar form. Ironically, however, most past theories of masochism have ignored the connection between masochism and sexual pleasure. has criticized his fellow psychoanalysts for having neglected the sexual aspect of masochism in their theoretical efforts. Some theorists have dodged the issue by talking about nonsexual masochism. But there is no question that many people derive sexual stimulation and pleasure from submission.
