Description
Uncontrolled excitotoxicity and neuroinflammation contribute to cell death and damage in neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, including those related to stress exposure (neurodegenerative diseases, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia). Stress exposure elicits excitotoxicity due to the massive release of the excitatory amino acid glutamate in some brain areas (e.g., the prefrontal cortex) inducing a neuroinflammatory response. The result of this sequence of events is the accumulation of oxidative and nitrosative mediators, which can produce cellular damage/death by oxido/nitrosative stress.
