Description
Exposure to ionizing radiation during spaceflight can put the health of the astronauts at risk. Curcumin is a promising radioprotectant drug because it acts as an antioxidant and can initiate cellular DNA repair mechanisms; however, its effectiveness in vivo has been limited. The objective of this work is to create a drug delivery system involving albumin nanoparticles that release curcumin. The effects of albumin concentration on nanoparticle size, concentration of curcumin, and release properties will be examined. These albumin nanoparticles could enhance curcumin's therapeutic effectiveness so it can be used as a countermeasure against ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage.
