Description
The post-fledging period, ranging from fledging to departure on fall migration, is critical for the survival of juvenile birds, as recently fledged individuals have little experience in foraging and avoiding predators and anthropogenic threats (Anders et al. 1998). In addition, the post-fledging period is of great ecological importance for adults and juveniles, because birds must build up the appropriate fat reserves and molt, at least partially, before the fall migration. The post-fledging period, which in some bird species can extend to several months, lasts up to 2 mo for the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni; Olea et al. 2004). The Lesser Kestrel is a small migratory falcon that breeds in southern Europe, and winters in sub-Saharan Africa (Cramp and Simmons 1980).
