Background: MicroRNAs (miRNA) are important regulators of atrial fibrillation (AF) remodeling and are potential targets for therapy. Explorative studies are typically small scaled and focus on singular differentially expressed miRNAs.
Objective: To determine which groups of miRNAs are specific to the paroxysmal (pAF) or persistent AF (perAF) substrate and to determine the associated pathophysiology.
Methods: Total RNA was isolated from left atrial tissues that were retrieved during cardiac surgery of non-AF (n= 19), pAF (n= 23) and perAF (n= 21) patients. MiRNAs were sequenced on the Illumina Nextseq500. MiRNAs that varied (adjusted P< 0.05) after age and gender correction between non-AF, pAF and perAF were used for hierarchical clustering.
