At its core, creative tourism involves active learning experiences enabling creative self-expression and skill development. The roots of creative tourism are closely associated with workshops to learn a craft or artistic technique, or another cultural specificity of a place (Duxbury & Richards, 2019). In 2000, Greg Richards and Crispin Raymond put forward what has become the touchstone definition of creative tourism:“Tourism which offers visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through active participation in learning experiences which are characteristic of the holiday destination where they are undertaken”(p. 18). The CREATOUR project1 (2016–2020) identified four reoccurring key dimensions of creative tourism–active participation, learning, opportunity for creative self-expression, and immersion into community–all underscored by the place in which the activities occur.
