This chapter considers 5G technology from the performance point of view by illustrating 5G network capabilities to the operators and to the end users in terms of data rates, capacity, coverage, energy efficiency, connectivity, and latency. The data rate can be increased with larger bandwidth, with more antennas using multi‐stream transmission and with higher‐order modulation. All these solutions are part of the 5G specifications. The peak data rate can be calculated with the transmission bandwidth, with the maximum number of multiantenna transmissions, and with number of bits per symbol with the maximum modulation level. Practical user data rates will be lower than the theoretical peak rates. Low latency communication is one of the targets in 5G networks.
