Personalized medicine incorporates genetic, environmental and behavioral factors for treating patients based on an individual patient’s needs and preferences. Patients are categorized based on genomic data and biologic characteristics. Personalized medicine, as opposed to the ‘one size, fits all’model, emphasizes tailored therapy. Medicine has always focused on providing personalized care to patients for over five millennia of history. During the Hippocratic era, the four humors–blood, phlegm, black and yellow bile–were considered a benchmark, and an imbalance between them was considered to cause diseases. It arose with the primary goal of optimizing and improving healthcare, as well as uncovering and understanding pathogenesis to provide effective and precise treatment.
