T> HE cover cartoon illustrates the confusion caused by a crocodile loose in a courtroom, and how little zoologists know of court procedures, or lawyers of zoology. The inexperience of most lawyers and zoologists with the principal modes of thinking of the other can produce concern, awe and mistrust in some of their dealings. However, on the day of the Zoology in Court forum on 24 November 1990, no-one was trying to win a case, there was no threat of losing, no reputation was at stake. Consequently, the day sparkled with wit and enthusiasm as speakers pursued their pet themes and indicated where bridges might lie between zoology and law. As each speaker, and many in the audience, had first-hand experience of zoology in a courtroom, the points being made were readily appreciated, and keen questions were formulated.
