Description
This work discusses the implementation of manufacturing constraints in a optimization framework for the design of fiber composite structures. New innovations in this field such as the automated fiber placement (AFP) capability have enabled designers to use novel concepts like variable angle tow (VAT) laminates in designs. However, practical constraints exist, limiting the minimum turning radius of fiber paths. Another issue that should be avoided is the excessive overlap or gaps between adjoining composite tapes. In this work, constraint formulations based on the grad and curl of the tow path was extended to a more generalized design optimization framework. This framework is developed such that it can handle a general user-specified geometry and perform design optimization using industry-standard tools that are widely used by the aerospace design community.
