Amsterdam is frequently mentioned as one of the most prominent examples of contemporary urban overtourism, along with cities such as Berlin, Barcelona and Venice. Dissatisfaction or even anger with the development of tourism in the inner city is voiced on social media and in the opinion pages of local newspapers such as Het Parool. It is often said that overtourism–residents’ perception of tourism growth as excessive–is not a new phenomenon; residents’ reactions to tourism development have indeed been studied for several decades. This literature has sought to identify the antecedents of the range of perceptions and reactions–from positive to negative–among residents. This chapter studies the causes of particularly the most negative reactions to tourism among Amsterdam residents, with the outcomes of different surveys and qualitative studies of resident reactions and attitudes.
