Description
In tourist cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam or Reykjavik, the emergent phenomenon of urban vacation rentals has played a central role in the social debate about the impact of tourism. The result of visitors using Airbnb and other ‘home sharing’platforms, although initially promoted as a manifestation of anti-consumerist cooperation within and among communities–and also generally perceived to be an idealist movement–soon appeared to be not that these tourists were spending holidays bonding with locals outside the commercial tourist bubbles, but rather that they would turn into a competing demand for the scarce living space in cities' most attractive places.
