Descripción
The creation of institutions to meet the challenge of sustainability is an important task confronting society. Panarchy, a term devised to describe evolving hierarchical systems, offers an important new framework for integrating insights from ecology and the social sciences in this effort. The book resulted from a 3-year project to advance the theory, policy and practice involved in resolving issues that emerge from the interaction between people and nature. There are 16 chapters have three fundamental themes. One emerges from the mathematics and metaphors of stability, resilience and change reviewed. The second theme recognizes that cross-scale interactions occur in nature. The third theme is one of adaptive change and learning. The book will be of interest to researchers, professionals and students involved with ecology, economics, environmental policy and related fields.
