Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural therapy. It is often described as ‘CBT with a capital B’as it is so strongly behavioural. It is slightly unusual in the cognitive therapies, being delivered by a team of therapists rather than an individual practitioner working alone. All therapists delivering DBT must belong to a consultation team and the weekly consultation meeting is built in to the structure of the therapy. This ensures that the principles of the treatment are applied to the therapist as well as the client. DBT is primarily used to treat suicidal and self-harming behavioural problems associated with borderline personality disorder, although subsequent adaptations have been developed to treat substance misuse, eating problems, suicidal adolescents, treatmentresistant depression and over-controlled personality disorders.
