Description
It has been suggested that higher-fibre diet should be given to rabbits to prevent enterotoxaemia. There have been recent cases of mucoid enteritis in rabbits, and among those examined post mortem, most had a blockage in the gut. All the owners stated either that the rabbits had been given high-fibre diet, 22% fibre or greater, or that the diet had moderate fibre, 15 to 20%, and was supplemented with hay, straw or other fibrous material. Feeding trials have been designed, that are to find whether there may be an upper limit for fibre in rabbit diet. Trials take time, and meanwhile if rabbit growers find an outbreak of true mucoid enteritis, they should examine the fibre content of the diet.
