Description
Leucaena leucocephala harvested in Hawaii was oven-dried; leaves were then shaken off the plant and ground. In Oregon groups of 6 young New Zealand White rabbits were given diets with 40% L. leucocephala meal or 40% lucerne meal (control); the rest of the diets given to all rabbits comprised soya bean meal 16, ground maize 34.5, salt 0.5, vegetable oil 3, dicalcium phosphate 0.5, molasses 5, celite 0.5%. Digestibility of crude protein for rabbits given L.leucocephala was 67.7 and for those given lucerne 74.8%; digestibility of cell wall constituents was 12.5 and 20.5% and of acid detergent fibre was 16.0 and 22.6%. None of the differences between diets was statistically significant. Daily feed intake was 65 g and 126 g daily, respectively. The urine of rabbits given L. leucocephala was deep red to black in colour.
