Description
The Japanese study group was selected from the population of about 100 000 persons under study by the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission and the Japanese National Institute of Health for the delayed effects of radiation. The 20% used in this study have been examined biennially since 1958. The study group in Honolulu was found through selective service records from the Second World War. The Californian subjects were male Issei born in Japan, and male Nisei born of Issei parents in the United States, 30 to 69 years old and living in 8 San Francisco Bay area counties. In addition, 835 Japanese men living in Santa Clara County were examined. The groups were limited to men 45 to 69 years old at the initial examination: 2183 men in Japan, 8006 in Hawaii and 2296 in California. Blood pressures were similar in the Hawaiian and Japanese men.
