In Chap. 2, standard application-specific mappings were shown. The task of DS is to find the mapping exhibiting the best correspondence to a set of training data. To identify the best correspondence or fit, appropriate quantitative characteristics have been formulated. Mostly, they have the form of an error measure that is to be minimized.
