Incorporating a review of existing literature and results of unpublished field research undertaken by the authors over the past 20 years, this volume represents a well-supported study of the most diverse locale for freshwater fish in all of Australia. Northeastern Australia faces an increased pace of development, which makes necessary an increased pace of environmental management. Some 130 native species in about 30 families--about half the fauna of the entire continent--are profiled in a manner sufficiently detailed for ecologists, ichthyologists, and environmental managers, yet accessible to avid fish-oriented amateurs. Each description includes taxonomy, systematics, and evolutionary history, biogeography, distribution patterns, habitat requirements, environmental tolerances, and reproductive, feeding, and movement biology.
