Williams is the doyenne of eleventh-century historical studies: all English historians are in her debt for producing, with the late Henry Loyn, the Alecto facsimile edition of Domesday Book, followed more recently by a facsimile edition of Little Domesday; her profound knowledge of the period has been shared with the less well-informed in her Biographical dictionary of Dark-Age Britain (1991) and in her contributions to Chris Coredon’s Dictionary of medieval terms and phrases (2004), but it is her major monographs that have demonstrated her mastery of the period: The English and the Norman conquest (1995),
