Electrolyte puts up a fight: The electrolyte is one of the greatest challenges facing the development of the non‐aqueous Li–O₂ battery. Although ether‐based electrolytes do from Li₂O₂ on the first discharge, it is shown by various techniques that they also decompose and that decomposition increases while Li₂O₂ decreases on cycling (see picture). Thus, these electrolytes are not suitable.
