Description
The purpose of this paper is to examine the regional dimension of transition, seeking to trace and analyze the major influences of the complex process of marketization in the Central and East European (CEE) countries and their gradual integration into the world economy, exploring at the same time the future spatial order of the European economic system. Several questions arise about the distribution of costs and benefits in the restructuring of space and the impact of the operation of economic forces across regional productive bases. For policy purposes, it is important to know whether the emerging pattern of development will be a spatially selective one, deteriorating further the position of lagging and depressed regions, or, on the contrary, whether it will have a diffusing nature.
