Description
The content of organizational socialization has been the focus of an increasing number of investigations in recent years (eg, Klein & Weaver, 2000; Taormina, 2004). These studies have improved our understanding of sociaHzation beyond the more narrow contextual focus of prior years (eg, Orpen, 1995). Unfortunately, this area of research suffers from two weaknesses. First, content has been investigated through a variety of scales, creating message inconsistency. Second, many studies have viewed content only as a knowledge outcome rather than as a feature of messages communicated to newcomers. A revised version of the Chao et al.(1994) scale may address both these weaknesses. This article's study tested the scale's validity as part of a larger study of context and content during socialization. The potential for this scale's future use is discussed in light of recent developments in socialization content research.
