Prof. Nairn Kheir highlighted the motivation for organizing this panel discussion; to date there have been three symposia on CAD of Control Systems sponsored by the IFAC in addition to three more sponsored by the IEEE. The first IFAC symposium was held during 1979 in Zurich. The tremendous interest in this developing field since the early 1970's in universities (across Europe and the US), as well as in industry, resulted in a large number of software packages (1-5) as well as a good number of sessions and presentations in conferences including this 1987 IFAC Congress. Kheir proceeded to present a summary of the 1985 IFAC symposium (Lyngby, Denmark), as an illustration of such growth in research and developnent, and sllllmal'ized areas of conm:: m concern in future developnents.
