Drawing on the themes of resistance and activism, this chapter examines the ways in which violent conflict informs women’s activism. Specifically, we analyse the relationship between women-led activism in favour of war and women-led activism in opposition to war. Using the example of Myanmar, we argue that feminist peace research has the potential to complicate some of the most simplified assumptions on the nature of women’s activism, by recognising the multiple, and sometime contradictory, roles occupied by women’s rights activists. In exploring how the struggle for gender equality shapes women’s activism during times of upheaval and conflict, we suggest that women’s demands for recognition and rights are informed by the need to subvert oppressive power structures found within both armed forces and state institutions.
