IUCD’s releasing 25/tg day of norethindrone acetate were inserted in four regularly menstruating women for two insertions lasting for 7--9 months each. Serum levels of LH. FSH. estradiol (El) and progestrone (Pl were estimated in control and treatment cycles by specific radioimmunoassays. All the control cycles and nine out of eleven treatment cycles were ovulatory. In the anovulatory cycles one cycle showed suppression of LH and P and FSH was irregular. while other had ovulatory P levels without LH peak. The menstrual bleeding pattern was undisturbed in three women. but the fourth experienced inlermenstrual bleeding. Endometrial histology revealed a disparity between stromal and glandular components. Although the overall pattern of endometrial tissue corresponded to the phase of the menstrual cycle. dating was not possible.
