Description
The purpose of this paper was to compare two recently developed measures of interpersonal forgiveness. A total of 111 student participants and 108 of their same-gender parents completed the Enright Forgiveness Inventory (EFI), the Wade Forgiveness Scale (WFS), as well as a number of other scales. Both the forgiveness scales showed strong internal consistency reliability, with the EFI showing slightly higher alphas. The EFI subscales are clearly distinguishable from one another. The WFS subscales were less so. Both scales correlated positively with the one-item forgiveness question and correlated negatively with anger. The EFI displayed a higher positive correlation with the One-item Forgiveness Question, and a higher negative correlation with anger when compared with corresponding correlations between these instruments and the WFS. The EFI is efficient in detecting developmental differences. This was not true for the WFS. Both instruments demonstrated that they are valid measures of forgiveness with the EFI displaying better properties as a true measure of interpersonal forgiveness. iv
