This paper highlights the interdependencies between urban development and rural/agricultural development in developing countries. Sections discuss: the role of urban central places as service centres for rural and urban populations; land-owning patterns and urban development; the role and impact of transport infrastructure; the developmental role of local government; and the question of whether rural diversification and urban migration are driven by prosperity or poverty.
