Continuing the success of previous competitions (see Surface Engineering, 1998, 14, 37–41, 1999, 15, 143–172, 2000, 16, 147–180, 2001, 17, 139–162, 2002, 18, 127–156 and 228–236, 2003, 19, 205–235 and 299–330, 2004, 20, 404–424, 2005, 21, 6–16), the 2006 Bodycote International Paper Competition attracted entries from students in universities and industrial research laboratories across the UK, continental Europe and the USA. Six papers were shortlisted and the authors were invited to submit full length papers, from which four were chosen by a panel of academics and industrial experts to give oral presentations in front of an invited audience. The prize winners were M. Esfandiari and H. Dong, whose paper is reproduced here with one of the joint second prize winners and two shortlisted papers.
