Description
Landscape transformation in the Colombian Andes has been extensive, and forests have been replaced largely by pastures and other anthropogenic habitats (Kattan & Alvarez-L6pez 1996); however, the realization that forests are important for maintaining watershed integrity has led to some protection and restoration efforts. One example is the Otfin River watershed on the central Andean range, which was deforested for cattle ranching and fine-wood extraction during the first half of the 20th century. Original forest remained only on the steepest slopes and some inaccessible canyons. In the 1950s, regional government agencies began to purchase private lands for watershed protection and in 1984, Ucumari Re-gional Park (URP) was created (Londofio 1994).
