Description
Recent developments in seafloor geodesy in Taiwan aims to study the shallow locking along the southern Ryukyu subduction zone where the Philippine Sea plate subducts underneath the Eurasia plate. Considering the superposition of backarc rifting of Okinawa Trough and plate convergence, the shortening rate across the Ryukyu accretionary prim increases from 92 mm/yr at east coast of Taiwan to 123 mm/yr near the Gagua Ridge. Despite a high shortening rate, historical and modern seismicity catalogs have revealed a scarcity of large earthquakes exceeding Mw 8. To resolve plate coupling along the southern Ryukyu margin, four transponder arrays have been deployed offshore eastern Taiwan since 2009. In this study, we used GNSS-acoustic data to estimate the velocity at OHUA, located in the Nanao forearc basin and examine fault coupling on the plate interface.
