Description
This study examines the relationships between precipitation and lightning in the mid-and high-latitudes using 22 months of coincident flashes from the Geostationary Lightning Mappers (GLMs) on the GOES-16/17 satellite and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission observed radar and microwave radiometer-defined convective precipitation features (cPFs). Relationships are investigated between lightning flash rate and maximum echo top height at certain reflectivity thresholds, minimum polarization corrected brightness temperature (PCT) of each feature, as well as area of cold brightness temperatures at 37 and 89 GHz over the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas up to±50. The GLM-based results are consistent with previous lightning and precipitation studies, such as the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM).
