Description
There are two extreme points one can consider as the basis of socialization, namely the traditional and modern and the present changing pattern is a compromise between the two extremes. First of all, which is the traditional view of socialization in Indian context? A number of studies have been done on this. Joan Mencher in her study of Nairs in South Malabar, Kerala State has described the ideal qualities of a child in the traditional setting.
A good child, in the traditional context, may be described as humble; intelligent, although not necessarily brilliant; kind to small babies and animals; religious, in the sense of going to the temple once a day; noninterfering; and well-behaved in not being mischievous and avoiding quarrels with other children. He should above all, be obedient and respectful to elders. ¹
