Description
An estimated one out of every two women is sexually harassed during her working life, making it perhaps the most widespread form of violence against women. ‘Sexual harassment’ (also known as ‘sex-based harassment’) encompasses three categories of conduct: gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion. The more women encounter these harassing behaviors on the job, the more they report symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress; increased use of alcohol and drugs; and disordered eating. Other cognitive and emotional correlates include negative mood, self-blame, reduced self-esteem, emotional exhaustion, anger, disgust, envy, fear, and lowered satisfaction with life in general.
