A preliminary investigation was conducted for the presence of Cryptosporidium infection in man and animals in Pondicherry. The stool/faecal samples of man, cattle, goats, dogs, pigs, rats, mice and intestinal contents of poultry were examined by routine and modified Ziehl-Neelson acid fast staining technique and 8.53% were found positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts. Highest infection (25%) Was recorded in calves below 1 year of age. The size of oocysts varied with the hosts. The largest size of oocysts was recorded from a kid and a fowl. The smallest oocysts were recorded from a pup. The oocysts recorded from a human being were identified as C. parvum. The oocysts from cattle were larger and identified as C. andersoni. Most of the calves were having concurrent infection of Strongyloides spp. Hot and cold ZN staining showed the same results. Mucus portioh of the faecal/stool sample was found ideal for diagnosis ofcryptosporidiosis.
