Description
8 laboratory reared uninfected 15-day-old piglets (GI) were immunized with the first peak of Sephadex G-200 fractionated C. cellulosae [T. solium metacestode] antigens. The antigen fraction was diluted with Freund's complete adjuvant and 2 ml was given im and 2 ml subcutaneously. A second group of 8 (G2) received second peak antigens administered in the same way. A third group of 8 piglets (G3) received only adjuvant. The immunization was repeated 2 weeks later. After a further 2 weeks all animals were orally challenged with 15 000 infective T. solium eggs from proglottids freshly expelled from human patients. The clinical, humoral and parasitic responses were measured in 4 piglets from each group necropsied 4 and 12 weeks after challenge. The highest antibody titres (by IHAT) were 1:2048 in G1, compared with 1:8 in G3. Both G1 and G2 pigs had less severe infections with T. solium cysticerci than …
