The way paid labor is organized in space and time has always been subject to change. The Industrial Revolution shifted men’s paid labor from the home to the industrial workplace of the factory. Since the first half of the 20th century collective bargaining and worker protection laws have reorganized the conduct of paid labor by limiting the number of hours of the workweek. The current decade forms no exception, though some of the changes in the spatiotemporal organization of employment (for example, the employment location, time and duration) seem to reverse past trends. Not only are more and more women holding a paid job nowadays; they are also working longer hours per week, thereby further contributing to the feminization of the labor force (McDowell, 1991, 2001; Massey, 1994).
