Description
Our overview presented here is based on a systematic, in-depth analysis of scholarly literature from the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. We first identified over 600 articles containing the keywords “artificial intelligence” and “media”. Among them, we focused on 1) original media analyses that 2) analyze AI-related coverage of any form (including, eg, robots, voice assistants, and algorithms). This resulted in 30 studies that were left for content analysis. 1 Our analyses of these articles focus on the medium, geographic, and technological foci of the studies, as well as their research design. Figure 24.1 summarizes the results. Overall, scholarship on media representation of AI is rapidly expanding in recent years. The earliest study in our sample was published in 2017. Regarding content, current scholarship on the topic focuses mostly on (1) legacy media,(2) cases from “Western” countries, and (3) AI
