Description
The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector in any economy is characterized by a fair degree of heterogeneity and complexity. The definition of SME is not uniform across countries and within a particular country the definition changes over time. Across the world the SME firms make special contribution to the economies. They generate new jobs and contribute positively to the employment generation and poverty reduction. Further, this additional employment is generated with a relatively lower investment in capital compared to the large enterprises. SMEs also help to diversify the economic activities and improve the socio-economic health of the country.
Our thesis aims at understanding the role of SME firms in the Indian economy and the economy’s progress towards achieving the goals of sustainable development. It also analyses the nature and causes of the supply-side bottlenecks faced by this sector–particularly, the financial support required by these firms. The structure of the thesis is as follows:
