In this chapter, we question the usefulness of management research including the existing promotion and tenure (P&T) system in business schools. Ways of improving both are provided. We critique the current domination of the deductive method in developing theory, the focus on statistically focused articles that managers will not understand, the publication of articles that are written just for other scholars, and a reward system for research paperts that managers will never use. We suggest ways of changing business school policies to promote useful research and practical theory building, especially the method of induction. We identify numerous problems with the quality of published research and give suggestions for improvement.
