Description
In this chapter, we review the major events that influenced theories of employee motivation in the 20th century. Beginning with a review of seminal work in experimental psychology in the early 1900s, we trace the development of motivational theories through to goal setting theory today. Through this review, we introduce the key contributors to the field as well as the research that guided the way. We conclude with a view toward future directions for motivation research in the 21st century.
