Description
It has been suggested that signs of neuropathy appear earlier than other microvascular complications in diabetes mellitus. To evaluate the influence of intensified conventional insulin therapy (ICIT) in the prevention of diabetic microangiopathy, the preclini-cal signs of autonomic neuropathy, resting heart rate (RHR), hyperventilatory arrhythmia, standing/lying heart rate ratio (S/L), ortho-static decrease in blood pressure and increase in blood pressure during sustained handgrip, were investigated in children with type I diabetes (mean age: 12.2±2.3 years, mean duration of diabetes: 3.9±0.8 years) who had been treated since the onset of disease with:(1) twice a day monocomponent insulin (n= 15);(2) twice a day semisynthetic human insulin (n= 10), or (3) ICIT by means of NovoPen (n= 9).
