Description
[The opinions on competition and co-operation mentioned in the Autobiography are best illustrated in Mill’s Principles of Political Economy. In describing the Principles as a “joint production” with his wife, Mill calls special attention to her contribution to the chapter “On the Probable Futurity of the Labouring Classes”. When he was asked for permission to reprint the chapter as a tract (which never appeared) for working men, Harriet suggested that some passages from the previous chapter, “Of the Stationary State”, should be included. The extract below combines the relevant sections of these two chapters.
