This chapter aims to empirically measure the benefits from mode substitution, and empirically examines the use of current evaluation methodologies and suggests ways to improve them. It provides details on the methodology used to evaluate the benefits from mode substitution. The chapter describes the benefits from substitution to airlines, passengers and society respectively. In order to evaluate the benefits from mode substitution, two options of travel are compared. In the first option, the air journey, passenger arrives at London Heathrow (LHR) airport by a flight and then transfers to another flight that takes him to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport. In the other travel option, the High Speed Train (HST) journey, the passenger arrives at LHR by a flight and transfers to an HST service that takes him directly to Paris city-centre.
